Mrs. Penny Bost Schrum brings years of academic experience to benefit the students at Combine Academy. Graduating with Honors in English from Lenoir-Rhyne College (now University), Hickory, NC, she pursued graduate studies at both N.C. Central University, Durham, NC, and Appalachian State University, Boone, NC. Fields of study included early childhood education, library science, and English language and literature. In addition, she completed a certificate program in librarianship at the University of Utah, and holds certification in TEFL/TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language / Teaching English as a Second or Other Language). Keenly aware that learning is a lifetime adventure, she continues to engage in new learning opportunities.
A published writer and a workshop presenter for local, regional, and national events, Penny has classroom teaching experience with preschool age through adults. She has served as a school librarian, home educator, coordinator for an individualized computer-based learning lab, and tutor for various subjects and situations, including test preparation.
Combine's educational philosophy meshes closely with Penny's own. Since excelling academically will only enhance the collegiate experience of student athletes, the focus must be to prepare students to enter college studies with strength and confidence along with the knowledge that hard work is necessary for success. Each student brings a different background, different skill sets, and different needs. Concern for the student as a whole person is a cornerstone to Penny's teaching approach.
